My mom taught me how to sew when I was 5 years old. She had an ELNA and I was amazed at how easy it was to make something all by myself. We made crafts and bean bags and small things. I started making doll cloths and that was so much fun. ( my hands were small enough so it was very easy.)
In THOSE days we had HOME EC in junior high school and I took sewing and cooking class! ( so much for the cooking class) But the sewing class was so much fun. I failed my first project because I went ahead of the class and finished my "overalls" in one week. The project was supposed to take the entire semester! ( they came out perfectly) Fit like a glove!
I continued sewing for my self. My first apartment I made curtains, pillows and things around the house. I always looked for fabrics that were on sale and then I discovered IKEA! They have loud, brightly colored fabrics and I was in heaven.
When my best friend asked me to be her brides maid, I was so happy. I asked her
"is there anything I can do for you" At the time I did not know what a brides maid's job was.
She said " Can you make all the dresses since you sew?"
I was shocked! I made 5 dresses for all the flower girls and myself. It was so much fun but we all looked like a bunch of lavender poofs! It was the 80’s, what else would you expect! I enjoyed every minute of making those dresses.
When I got married my husband was always thoughtful. One day he bought me a vacuum and a blender. I immediately threw them both in the garbage.
I said " I'm not a great cook and I certainly do not know how to use a vacuum.
He got the hint and one day came home with my favorite gift: A brand new sewing machine from Singer. It was over $200 and I was very nervous because I had never had a gift that cost that much money. I treated it like GOLD! I had that machine for over 35 years and it still works. It's yellow, but it works!
While dropping off my sewing machine for a tune up, I realized my machine was on it's last legs. Walking around the store, I saw what was soon to become my new machine! It did EVERYTHING, sew I bought it. My Luminaire is now my new addiction!
